SharePoint 2010 Delivers More Business Value

If you haven't heard about SharePoint, it is Microsoft's highly successful business collaboration, content management and enterprise search technology. Microsoft released the greatly anticipated, overhauled SharePoint 2010 in early 2010. Before looking at the new features, it's important to understand how SharePoint benefits both internal users and users "outside the firewall".

Companies are using SharePoint 2010 in many ways to deliver significant value by:
  • Providing Powerful Content Management
  • Improving Communication & Collaboration
  • Streamlining and Speeding Business Processes
  • Increasing Productivity
  • Capturing & Leveraging Better Business Intelligence
  • Tapping Into "Hidden" Corporate Intellectual Property
  • Reducing IT Costs
SharePoint's power and flexibility make it an excellent fit for many types of projects including the following:
  • Portals / Intranets
  • Enterprise 2.0 / Collaboration Solutions
  • Public Websites
  • Custom Web-Applications
  • Business Intelligence
  • Enterprise Search

At Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in 2009, the SharePoint team provided a sneak peak into some of the valuable new functionality in SharePoint 2010:

  • An overhauled, much improved user-experience. If you've used 2003 or 2007, you know that it was a little clunky and operations often took many steps. SharePoint 2010 includes a new Ribbon menu which enables much richer management directly on-page.
  • Multi-browser support. 2007 was highly geared toward Internet Explorer however 2010 delivers support for IE, Firefox, Safari and other browsers.
  • Better rich media support. In this age of interactive, video and other rich media, support of these media is critical to meeting users' demands. 2010 will provide much deeper rich media support including video, Silverlight and other rich media.
  • Deep integration with Visio through Visio Services.
  • Richer connectivity and interaction with disparate data sources. The new Business Connectivity Services (BCS) enables interaction with data, whether that data is in SharePoint, other back-end applications or disparate databases. Once in SharePoint, you can take any of this data offline into Office applications like Word, Excel or Visio.
  • Streamlined SharePoint administration. If you've administered 2007, you'll appreciate a much more intuitive user interface.
  • Improved scalability of lists and libraries, which was a constraint in previous versions.
